It's no secret that schools and learning will look drastically different this year. Students are embracing the new digital environment in amazing ways and rising to the challenge of virtual learning. However, it is hard to foster a love for reading without a good book in your hands. Students can only read so much text on an illuminated computer screen, and it does not create that same beloved feeling of holding a whole world in your hands. When a student feels the pages of a book between their hands and read the words on a physical page, they connect to the text in a deep, profound way. The novel "The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary" will be used to start the uncertain and stressful school year in a fun way. Students will get to see themselves in the characters who are trying to save their school from being turned into a supermarket. The novel is written from 18 different student perspectives and all in the form of poetry. This format is highly engaging for students and allows a great foundation for learning about fiction, characterization, and poetry. Your donation will help give each of my fifth grade students their own personal copy of this book to read, study, and enjoy. At a time where schools, and school libraries, are closed, many students are struggling to access physical chapter books. Your donation will help them have their own book they can cherish forever, no matter how the school year continues to look.
