Artists in the Making
Funded Aug 13, 2021We were so excited to receive the paint supplies: acrylic paint, watercolor paint, brushes, and palettes. We have used the watercolors to create beautiful constellation-galaxy paintings, and the acrylic to create wonderful Dia de Los Muertos sugar-skull gatos.
The students love learning how to use real art supplies, and do activities like mixing paint and trying different application techniques. The paint and brushes are of the highest quality, and they get so excited seeing how their projects turn out.
We will continue using these supplies throughout the year- our next project will be learning color theory and applying that to a few projects! Thank you for supporting the arts in the classroom- the students truly light up when they get to use art supplies!”

Funded Oct 22, 2020We received paint, watercolor paper, and paintbrushes that I was able to send home to the students during Distance Learning. The students were so excited and surprised! They have really enjoyed using the watercolors so far.
We started with an introduction to watercolor as a medium and tried different techniques. We then applied those techniques (color blending, value, and different textures) to a simple gemstone guided drawing.
Next, we learned about color theory and are in the middle of applying that to a warm and cool color scheme animal painting. The students have really been enjoying these projects!”

STEM Activities for Future Leaders
Funded Nov 19, 2019My students were so excited when they opened the STEM activities! They take such good care of the materials, and are getting some great hands-on STEM exploration! They enjoy experimenting and trying new things to build in the marble run or magnetic tiles.
I can't wait for our next math unit, which is geometry, and giving the students the opportunity to use the magnetic tiles to create 2D and 3D shapes. It will help them have a concrete understanding of what is often an abstract concept by building different types of triangular prisms etc.”

Fresh Library!
Funded Jun 4, 2019I was able to purchase several baskets for the library, as you can see here. Each basket has its own genre or topic or theme, which will help students learn genre, as well as help them find books they enjoy and articulate what types of books they seem to gravitate towards.
Additionally, within each basket, the books are leveled using Accelerated Reader- the goal is to get kids reading at their level and at their interest for 35 minutes per day! Some of this will be done individually, and some will be done in literature circles to benefit from hearing others' perspectives.
Additionally, I will be using these books for teacher read alouds, which are shown to benefit even older kids! I'm so excited about this accessible library and how it will produce passionate readers and learners for life!”

The Nature Classroom: 6th-Grade Camp
Funded Oct 22, 2018Thank you so much for supporting my students in their Outdoor Ed experience. The trip was such a success- they learned about forest ecology and herpetology on various hikes through the redwood forest. Their nature guides were knowledgeable and engaging as they guided the students through identifying different plants, noticing the effects of humans on the environment, and the clues of different animals' habitats.
The highlight of the trip was a night hike in which there were no flashlights! Instead, the students learned how their other senses become more sensitive, and they relied on their hearing more. Additionally, they learned about how their eyes adjust to the darkness. One of best parts of the night hike was a solo hike, in which the students got to follow some well-placed red lights along a small stretch of the trail completely alone, using their hearing and night vision to experience the woods at night. Many of the students were nervous, but all were thrilled to have taken such a risk and overcome their nerves!
Back in the classroom, the students have referred to their experiences as a way to overcome obstacles in creating and honing their growth mindset. Additionally, we've been able to utilize situations from the trip during our Language Arts and Math lessons as a context for learning certain skills. This trip truly is the best part of 6th grade, and something they will remember forever! Thank you for joining us in this journey!”
