Right now I am lacking the proper materials of a clay studio to function properly. Currently my students are using rolling pins from the dollar store to create slabs. This creates issues because they are tapered, which means students struggle to create an even slab and they are wooden which means they are sensitive to water. I end up replacing most of my rolling pins each year due to cracking. Often kids get frustrated and re-start their project multiple times to get the right slab to build their project. With the re-starting, we lose time and some students lose patience with the project. My hope is that by having this slab roller in the room we can become a more efficient studio, allowing students to get to work quickly and confidently on building whatever they need. This will allow students more time to enhance their work and allow me more time in the schedule to build in other projects. If I attempt to purchase this with my budget money it will cut out about half of my projects that I attempt to do, because it would put such a massive dent in my spending. I would have to go with very basic, paper and pencil projects for the year since I wouldn't be able to afford more costly items like paint, ink, linoleum and photo paper.
