  • Learning About Addiction From Books

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for donating these books and materials about drug use to our classes. Our students love the unit and were very engaged in the text. We could not have done this unit without you!

We read and discussed Heroine by Mindy McGinnis in class. Students learned about Mickey, a high school softball player, who was in a car crash and became addicted to opiates during her recovery. This novel helped students better understand the opiate crisis in America. By being exposed to an emotional story, the issues became more real to students.

We will be starting this unit with a new group of students soon. Thank you again for all of your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lanzas

  • Kindles for Remote Learning

    Funded Jul 10, 2020

Thank you so much for all of your generous support. Our teachers and students were so happy to receive these resources!

Since we are still in remote learning, many of the resources we distribute to students are electronic. This project has enabled several students access to ebooks and audiobooks that otherwise would not have access.

Additionally, the kindles are much easier for students to read on than phones or computers. We also have several students who are able to read longer and retain more information because they have access to these devices.

Finally, the protective cases and screen protectors will ensure that these devices will last for years.”

  • Where are the New Books?

    Funded Mar 4, 2020

Thank you so much for your donations. These titles will be very impactful during the next school year at Wilson. They will be read by individual students, classes, and clubs. Due to recent current events, students are more excited than ever to read books about racial equity. I have even had some students contact me to see if they can read the books over the summer!

All of the books arrived at Wilson and will be ready to use in the fall. Students and teachers are very excited to use them. Again, thank you so much.”

Our students need access to engaging books from a wide variety of perspectives. Teachers and students need relevant, engaging books about current social issues and we do not have enough copies of these titles in the library. All of the award winning books on this list were requested by either students, teachers, or staff running book clubs. But, we do not have enough copies available for students, classes or clubs to use. By helping us with this project, students will have better access to engaging, relevant texts from a wide variety of perspectives. Teachers will be able to use these books in classes and clubs.
