My students need binders, binder pouches, dividers and tabs, markers, copy paper sticky notes, along with mechanical pencils and lead refills to help them learn the life skill of organizing, using AVID strategies! I would love for my 35 scholars to walk into my room every day with a binder that has a place for all subject areas, paper available, and a pencil pouch that can hold all accessories needed for a successful day at school. When you open their binders, you will see an organized, useful use of all materials. Daily notes will be under each subject tab, which will help learn the important skill of pulling out important information and incorporate note taking into daily and weekly writing. Under reading, you would see beautifully crafted one pagers that demonstrate understanding of reading that has been taking place throughout the school year. Assessment reports will be under the appropriate tab as well, which will help students reflect and create goals to improve continuous learning.
I personally believe that being organized is the key to success in life. With all events that are happening in my scholar's lives, having an organized learning experience, will help my students know what is expected each day, and there will be no surprises.
Having received professional development in AVID strategies, I understand the importance of teaching this lifelong skill at the elementary level. My Northwestern University scholars will be able to organize the amazing work that they already do in class, and show off their accomplishments. I believe it is never too early to promote college and career readiness, and this will provide my scholars with the opportunity to be even more successful - through organization!
