Our school has never had a chess club until some students approached me this year about starting one. We pieced together a number of different types of chess sets to accommodate as many players as possible. I would have been happy with 10 players however, much to my delight, we currently have 31 members with more expressing interest every day! Surprisingly, although we are not prepared after only a couple weeks of training, we have already received our first challenge from a neighboring school! We want to accept but, without the proper equipment, we will have to postpone indefinitely. Fully funding this project will provide these students (and many more years after) with the necessary equipment to allow every member of the club the opportunity to play and practice lessons at the same time. It is absolutely essential to have chess boards that contain algebraic notation in order to conduct proper chess lessons. Without them, many students will become easily confused and the lessons become extraordinarily time consuming which can become discouraging to some. Fully resourcing this project will provide these students the opportunity to learn great sportsmanship, patience, to think critically with forethought, maintain focus, and ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
