I tested out flexible seating last year with the use of a couple of stools. What I found is that my students who were hyperactive tended to pay more attention and were actively engaged in their learning. The stools gave them the freedom to let their wiggles out in a contained space which did not distract the students around them. Student achievement also increased from previous years without incorporating elements of flexible seating. These flexible seating items will be used in the classroom for all students. It is hard to sit down and read in English when you have been sitting down all day in the same chair in every class. The seating will allow students to be able to wiggle while concentrating on the work ahead. As a teacher, I have a difficult time sitting still in a chair, so why should I expect my students to sit still all day. These simple tools will allow my students to focus and be comfortable in the classroom. When students feel comfortable and safe in a classroom, learning can occur.
