  • Sensory and Stem Building

    Funded Feb 16, 2024

I wanted to thank everyone who has helped make this project and experience a reality! My students absolutely love the stem products, and enjoy building and creating everyday! The ability to construct, map out, create, and problem solve with these products is and has been extremely helpful!

The student's were excited for the start when they saw the packages, and what they would have the opportunity to build! The first day, we had an open play and build session, in which the students were able to explore the tracks, sort them by color or size, and construct their own raceway, train track, bracelet, or necklace. The students then broke into group centers and created and explored together!

Thank you all for helping give the students the experience of teamwork, problem solving, and building!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

  • Chore Time!

    Funded May 16, 2023

I can not thank everyone that donated enough! My students are loving the items that were purchased. We have since built a chore chart, and the students can pick their own "clean up/chore" task! The chart has visuals (photos) of all of the objects purchased for our classroom (vacuum, broom and scooper, paper towels, and wipes! We have everything that we need to clean our classroom and help the students gain independence!

At the end of each day, the students line up to the chore chart, select their names, and then place their name tag on the Velcro stripe provided next to the chore picture. The students rotate daily so that they can learn new tasks and methods, as well as learn how to use these items appropriately and independently!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

  • Help us expand our Created Courtyard!

    Funded Apr 6, 2021

We can not begin to thank everyone enough once again! The ability to expand our garden and courtyard due to your generosity is beyond appreciated. These materials were and will be used to help continue to foster my students social skills, life skills, and independence for themselves as well as prepare them for the upcoming years, and independent living.

Each of the students has their own tasks for our garden and courtyard, and the maintaining of it. My students learn valuable life and social skills each day that they are out in the courtyard, and we are teaching them to continue to use these skills in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom and at home.

    Thank you all again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

  • Seating for our courtyard!

    Funded May 4, 2021

We just wanted to say thank you for all of your help and kindness helping my students be able to sit outside and enjoy their courtyard for work, eating, or to just be able to take a break from the classroom and change their environment for some of the day. My students actually enjoy eating outside at their tables during lunch time, and another student loves to use our bench to take his breaks from working in the garden or from his school day briefly.

These tables and benches have given our students a place to practice their social skills while outdoors, and these social skills have transitioned into some indoor classroom activity and projects. We can not thank everyone enough for their time, generosity, and consideration.

From all of us in room 116, thank you kindly,”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

  • A Place For My Students To Show Their Creativity

    Funded Mar 6, 2021

Thank you all for your support! Your generous donations helped my classroom build a garden that they can tend to daily! My students have enjoyed learning these new life skills while exploring their own creativity! The students enjoyed picking out white our garden beds were located, as well as our white fenced in garden. The students also enjoyed helping construct our shed and cabinet for storage.

This project was very beneficial for my students because it helped them show their creativity in placement of things, plants, and their own decorations. The students learned valuable skills like planting, weed pulling, sorting items on shelfs, organizing items in a shed and learning the purpose of having a shed. The students also had a great opportunity to work together on tasks and job distribution such as watering the flowers, organizing the tools in the shed, and a checklist for returned tools, raking and bagging leaves, and planting using pots and seeds as well!

We can not thank you enough,”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

  • Lean in and Learn

    Funded Sep 5, 2018

I can't begin to tell you about the impact that my donors choose project has had on the look and feel of my classroom for both the students and teachers! I also can not begin to thank you all enough! I currently teach a non-verbal Autistic Class at Roosevelt Middle School and when we only had the options to sit at desks to read or a big table in the center of the room reading time and or projects proved to be very difficult to accomplish. This was because the look and feel of the classroom was that of all seriousness and no comfort to my students. They had a tough time sitting still or in their standard wooden chairs attached to the desk or table. The donations we received completely changed that for us!

The classroom was that of a typical classroom and for some students it would be great, but for my class we needed a change and I had to think outside the box to try to get them to engage in reading or comprehension type of work. How could I do this? Where would I go in the building? Would this work? These were the obstacles I was facing. Then a co-worker came into the room and watched us struggle to try to read some stories and suggested that we try donorschoose.org. This turned out to be the best suggestion I have ever gotten from a co-worker.

Once I made my order I was nervous about how long if ever it would take to be founded, and to my surprise it was done quickly by very caring individuals that went above and beyond for my students! I was very happy that people like you exist! It gives my class a chance to learn differently in an environment that they feel comfortable in. Working with my class population comfort is essential. I ordered a couch, bean bag chair, and some books, all of these things has proved to be a huge component of why my students have made progress with their reading comprehension! My students love sitting on the couch or bean bag chair because it helps with their sensory needs and keeps them calm if they are able to move or need a different sensory feel then the bottom of a hard chair. It keeps them engaged because their bodies are more relaxed and less tense from the work position of sitting at a desk.

My students have a difficult time sitting still and very little way of expressing their feelings at times. Both the couch and beanbag chair give them that freedom to sit without sitting still all the time. They are excited to grab a book and jump on the couch and read or have the books read to them. The bean bag chair alone provides a ton of sensory for my students and gives them the ability to focus on the content because their bodies feel better and they do not feel the pressure of "work time" but they are in a more relaxed state to read and have a comprehensive boost to what they are reading or looking at. This new work environment helps the students to concentrate on the task of reading and being interested in a story instead of fight the notion of sitting at a desk to read.

In closing, I have been teaching this classroom for 12 years, and I can honestly say this approval and donation of projects has been a blessing! I cannot thank you enough for your generosity to donate to my students to help them learn to answer questions and read and just be comfortable while they learn! I have recommended this to many co-workers and I will even attempt more things for my own classroom because the positive change in the students attitudes while they read is nothing short of amazing. So from room 208 at RMS we cannot thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Postiglione

I chose resources that can help my students be comfortable with their surroundings and some of their sensory needs. I believe this will help them learn to both read, and comprehend what they read. While sitting at a desk, my students are not always fully engaged and their sensory needs keep them from sitting still, however, on a couch or a bean bag chair they can get the sensation they need while staying focused with reading. That is why I have asked for help obtaining a couch and a bean bag chair for my students, along with a radio to listen to some books on CD. My students can be more relaxed during reading time and it can give me as their teacher a chance to show them the wonders of a story and its content, not just the pictures. The reason I choose a radio as a resource is because not all the students are able to read, and most do not like headphones on, so hearing the story out loud from a CD can definitely help them follow along the story.
