I work with gifted students in a Title 1 environment. These students display the traits of curiosity as well as motivation to learn something new, and fast! I chose roller coasters as their next learning project to encompass these aspects. Using the K'nex roller coaster building sets, these students will learn to follow directions, then use this skill to build their own roller coaster designs. These gifted students will enjoy creating roller coasters through a hands on focus. By seeing the examples in the K'nex set and experimenting with potential and kinetic energy forces, students will gain an understanding of the world of engineering and STEM. Then, just as they think they have mastered these roller coasters, they will be given the opportunity to create their own rides from planning concept and discussion to a finished mode. Thus, new engineers are inspired.
