We will start our fictional literature unit with "Rain School" by James Rumford and "The Librarian of Basra" by Jeanette Winter. Students will be introduced to the guiding questions: "What is the power of education and reading?' and "How does where people live in the world affect how they access reading and books?' Students will focus on the central message of a text in their close readings and writings. Students will explore what it means to be a proficient and independent reader as they compare their experience to those who have faced obstacles in learning to read. They will identify their own strengths and needs as readers and writers and set their learning goals for the year.
