The students in my classroom are disadvantaged in many ways. The rate of poverty in this class (free or reduced rate lunch) is far above the state and national average. As such, most of these students face many struggles which translate into lacking social, emotional, intellectual, and organizational skills. By outfitting our classroom with some basic tools such as stools, whiteboards, and pocket charts, these students will be able to carry out everyday tasks. Organizational items such as a rolling cart and hanging file folders will allow us to store, file, and retrieve work in various subjects. Because many students face challenging lives at home, it is essential for them to feel safe and comfortable in our classroom. A large rug will make our classroom feel like a home where we can gather as a community for Morning Meetings, classroom discussions, and read-alouds. Additionally, the fidget bands, sensory toys, and noise-canceling headphones will find their place in a "regulation station" where students dealing with trauma can retreat to take a break and practice coping skills. Please help level the field for these precious children so that they can reach their full potential in life!
