The stools I'm requesting for this project have a home awaiting them already in my classroom. We will use these little stools along with several other available forms of alternative seating to help the students learn independence and self-motivation in their selection of a work environment. Students in my classroom will be able to enter the room at the start of the day and use our seating board to select a location that works well for their learning today. We are developing a whole variety of different types of work areas including yoga balls to sit on, standing desks, cushions on the floor, lap desks, and traditional chairs. As students select their seat each day, it is my goal to equip them to choose a place that will help them focus and allow them to move appropriately as they learn in the classroom environment. I have found through my years of experience in teaching that kids need to move! Requiring them to constantly hold still as they listen and work creates unneeded obstacles to their learning environments. I believe that school is a place where children should love to come and participate. I believe every kid should feel they can be successful in their classroom. Additionally a benefit of these alternative seating options is that children are building core muscles even as they sit and work. Providing this opportunity for alternative seating is a formative piece of keeping my classroom environment a welcoming place where everyone is able to succeed.
