It's not often that a group of 14 year old's can see themselves in literature. For most of my kids, their self perception is skewed by their surroundings. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has inspired my students to read, and read with a contagious enthusiasm I did not know was possible. For many of my students, they do not have access to books at home. Many of them have asked me if I could give them a copy of the book to take with them. These students have once been told they could not read novels, that they would not be able to understand the complexity of stories, to engage and discuss literature as if they were in a college discussion. They come to class early and beg to stay late to continue reading the book. To them, it isn't just a book, it's a justification of experiences they have faced and hope that their experiences will improve too. For this project I want to purchase a copy of the book for each of my students to have. My eighth grade English class has 20 students who are about to transition to high school. With this book, they can move forward with a piece of middle school still with them.
