Empowering Youth Journalists
Funded Sep 19, 2023We have one of the few active high school newspapers in Upper Manhattan. So for nearly every one of the students in my journalism elective pitching and reporting a story felt foreign at first. At the start of the year we explored other student led newspapers in the city to gather inspiration but even with these efforts things still felt abstract. It turns out that by simply getting access to the right tools my students went from being enrolled in a journalism course to being actual journalists. Today
"TCA Heights" is an active platform for student opinion, experience and voice. Your generous donation helped to make this possible.
Our class set of recorders have empowered a team of journalists in our small school to move through the hallways and sidewalks of our community with purpose. Students sign out the devices and gather quotes from their sources. They head back to their computers to transcribe their quotes and independently build out the latest stories. There's simply no way they could be this proactive and thoughtful without these recorders. Thank you for helping raise student voice at out school!”

Providing Individual Language Support!
Funded Sep 23, 2021Having a reliable class set of quality headphones as made access to audio supports (and music to work to) part of our classroom culture. Thanks to your generous donation we now have a basket of headphones (stored in their individual bags) set on top of our laptop cart. Now our class "workflow" involves students picking up a laptop, grabbing a pair of headphones and getting to work. My English language learners especially appreciate the use of these headphones as they now can fully access language and pronunciation supports. Thank you so much!”
