Help me fill my student's toolboxes with an engaging classroom library. My students range from grades K to 4 with a variety of literacy skills and needs. As a new teacher, my goal this school year is to create an environment rich in opportunities to increase literacy and a love of reading.
Children from lower-income homes have limited access to books. Because of this, students from low-income families have fewer literacy opportunities than children from economically advantaged backgrounds – a major reason that they lag behind in reading achievement throughout the school years.
Many of my students fall into this category of having limited opportunities and exposure to print. Having a classroom library with books for all abilities will give my students the power to open their window to the incredible world of reading.
