Studies show that students learn when they become responsible for their own learning. Think about the student who can use these manipulatives to grasp a math concept or to problem solve, then use them to explain the concept to a friend! These math manipulatives will provide not only the foundation to many math concepts, but allow students to explore and expand their knowledge for a higher order of thinking! These manipulatives like the "Ten-Frames Hands-On Teaching Kit" will allow each student in the class to have their own manipulatives to learn many math concepts. Utilizing ten-frames is a strategy that they can use during their district testing. In addition, the "Math in a Flash! Discovery Cans" is a tool students can use in independent small groups to promote discussion within partners and daily math review. The "Elementary Calendar Math Center" will be used whole group which will start at the beginning of each math lesson. Here, we can simply review today's day but also embed many math lessons like patterns or addition and subtraction by using the dates in the calendar. The "Write & Wipe Lapboards" is a quick tool for each student to show their thinking on their whiteboards. This will be during whole group discussion and small groups for partner math talk. These whiteboards will be used every day, plus less use of paper! The "Number Talk Daily Activity Center" are materials that I will use when I present a math problem to the class whole group. Then, I'll allow the students to figure the problem out individually. Next, students share answers aloud or by a partner. I will lead students to share their strategies and thinking. In the end, as a class, we will agree on the correct answer and strategy used. That's a Number Talk lesson!
