My elementary school is in a very small district, there is not a large music budget set aside. Our school has barred instruments and other percussion instruments that enhance our learning in the classroom, but are hoping to offer more for our students. In addition, every 4th grader at our school is provided a recorder, helping them to develop skills that are transferable to beginning band the following year. At this time, we do not currently do anything to foster more participation in orchestra. Enter: our ukulele fund project. Lately, classroom teachers and administrators have been commenting on how they are so pleased to be 'hearing music come out of the music room again.' Between myself and the middle and high school vocal music teacher, we are trying to introduce music to our students in a whole new way. Choir and band numbers within our district are low, but the addition of ukuleles and an engaging music program can inspire kids to keep participating in music as they go through their K-12 education. We truly believe that ukuleles could be the missing piece to our current program. Introducing ukulele in the music classroom will help our students become more musically literate and add another engaging component of learning. Children can feel immediately successful as they pick up this small instrument, place one finger over the bottom string on the third fret and play a C chord. By implementing ukulele in the music classroom, students who are hungry for more music can be challenged, develop skills to be used in orchestra, and feel like a rock star. Long term, I envision these instruments being utilized in the classroom and in ukulele club. We are ready to bring ukulele to a small town Nebraska community; all we need is your help!
