My students come from very low SES neighborhood in CA. The area is riddled with crime, drugs, and gangs. Their parents are in "survival mode" and it is a challenge for many students to be clothed and fed on a daily basis. My students receive free breakfast and lunch daily and there is not much money for the parents to purchase books their children. I am only able to purchase a few books at a time for them and that leaves them wanting more. Books have become a precious treasure to my students. We have a library at school, but many of the popular books at their levels are usually checked out. I appreciate any help you could provide to help my students to become better readers.
