  • Now That Story Works!

    Funded Dec 26, 2018

Thank you so much for our Scholastic "StoryWorks" magazines! As you can see in the photos we are so excited to have received our first month's subscription! This magazine is filled with wonderful fiction and nonfiction stories! It even comes with a teacher's guide and an online subscription to help us utilize this resource to the best of our abilities! These magazines get students who aren't use to reading different genres the chance to sample different genres and learn to love all types of reading! This month's magazine focus on theme and the main character. We can also include in Science and Social Studies with the nonfiction!

My classroom has a lot of guided reading and independent reading that these magazines are perfect for! We also teach in small groups and this resource is absolutely perfect for them to have their own copy.

When my students saw the new magazines come in they were so excited! When they opened them they immediately wanted to begin reading and wondering when they could start doing the activities!

Thank you so much for your generous donation. Please know that you are helping teachers like me introduce the love of reading to so many children and I cannot thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McConnell

  • Bringing Virtual Experiences to My Classroom

    Funded Jun 4, 2018

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom for our Virtual Reality glasses. A lot of my students have never been to the beach, even though its less than three hours away! This technology has taken my students in just the few weeks that I have had them to the Blue Ridge Mountains where they got to be on the top! They have been to the beautiful waterfalls in the Piedmont and have seen waves crash over them by the beaches of Hilton Head in the coastal zone. We have hundreds of experiences already loaded up for our students to experience. My students are thrilled every time they get to experience a new place!

My students love the fact that what they are learning in the classroom is coming to life right in front of them! They get to see what it feels like to be a part of the mountains with the beautiful fall leaves and how the rivers are quickly flowing coming down from the elevation at the top of our state. They think we are the coolest class because we have virtual reality glasses!

All of my students are receiving better scores on their test because they are now getting to experience the regions and environments that we have been studying. My students are always jumping at the chance to use them and I am forever grateful that you chose my class for your generous donation. You have reached over hundreds of children in our small town with your thoughtfulness!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McConnell

Why Virtual Reality? Edger Dale’s Cone of Experience has shown that the average person only remembers 20% of what they hear and 30% of what they see, but up to 90% of what they personally experience. As a result, lessons that incorporate virtual resources provide a richer and deeper experience that will have more of an impact on the learning experience of students. Our goal is to be able to travel to and explore places all over the world without leaving the classroom. Virtual reality makes travel possible without the constraints of time, fees, and permission slips. Without stepping foot on a bus, my students will be able to visit different regions of South Carolina, museums, national parks, historic battlefields, and monuments with virtual class tours. The Social Studies Content Interventionist for our school has been collecting and creating 360 photos and videos that align and support our 3rd grade social studies standards for South Carolina History. My students will now be able to explore different regions of South Carolina. From the Atlantic shores of the Coastal Region to the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, students will be able to experience the varying landforms in South Carolina. Students will also be able to explore our cities, national parks, battlefields, and museums to gain a deeper appreciation of South Carolina’s rich history and contributions to our nation’s story.
