  • 4th Graders See Art Everywhere!

    Funded Jan 3, 2025

Our 4th graders are so thankful to you for supporting out Donors Choose project, "4th Graders See Art Everywhere". Students engaged in reading, researching and writing reports about various artists from Van Gogh to Monet in our HMH Into Reading curriculum. Each class was able to create their own artistic MASTERPIECE inspired by one of Van Gogh, Yayoi Kusama, or Warhol's famous artwork. Students LOVED being able to use the paint, oil pastels, markers, and stickers you bought for them. We have some future artists! Thank you again for helping my students make connections from books to art! We still have some art materials left and we will be putting them to good use for our next module. The students are so excited and can't wait to get started on their next art projects. They never thought ELA could be this fun and it's all because of you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • 4th Graders Create Reading and Math Presentations Like Professionals

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Our fourth grade students and teachers want to thank you again for your generous donations towards our project, "4th Graders Create Reading and Math Presentations Like Professionals."

First of all, we created a Math and ELA class "refrigerator bulletin board". Remember pinning photos and notes on your kitchen refrigerator as a kid? Well, we have been taking pictures documenting our students' work and achievements in our classes to celebrate their hard work and create memories. We post our pics in our math and ELA classroom "refrigerators". The students are proud to take these pictures and hang them up to share.

In addition, the electronic clickers have helped us with our student presentations and class lessons. Being able to transition from slide to slide or using different media on the smartboard is a game changer. The students and teachers enjoy having this simple device support our learning and teaching!

Thank you for being a part of our learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • 4th Graders Shop for Books

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

Thank you for contributing to our "4th Graders Shop for Books" project. The students were so excited to see our new class Fiction library. They couldn't wait to browse through the baskets and pick out books to read. Thanks to you the students are reading about new topics, new characters, and new adventures.

Their discussions are rich in talks about their stories, new series and new authors. Through our book clubs, students are able to increase their oral comprehension, language comprehension, and written comprehension. Their vocabulary is expanding and their understanding of author's craft, point of view, and themes is exploding! I wish you could here their conversations!

Your support is much appreciated. Please know that you have brought a smile to 80 students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • Print! Copy! Read in 4th Grade!

    Funded Nov 15, 2022

Thank you for funding our "Print! Copy! Read in 4th Grade!" project.

We are fortunate to make individualized charts for students to use in their reading and writing classes. We can print small versions of our class charts so that they can use them as reference tools.

We are also able to print our published pieces to showcase their research reports on topics such as Black History Month and Women's History Month. Students love being able to print their reports and see their writing celebrated in class.

Finally, being able to make copies of materials such as homework, classwork, and student notices is another plus. So handy to have in class. Having our own fourth grade printer/copier has helped us with our learning and in creating some wonderful learning tools and projects.”

    With gratitude,

  • 1st Grade Math Wizards

    Funded Jan 2, 2018

Thank you for donating to my project, "1st Grade Math Wizards". My students are very happy to have these new math games. They love going to our math center and picking one of the games to play during math time. It makes math fun! The games you bought are teaching them how to count money, tell time, add, subtract and learn about fractions. My first graders are loving math. I can tell they are learning because I see how they help each other and talk about their math strategies while playing these games.

On behalf of my class, your support is much appreciated. Your investment has brightened the learning of 25 first graders.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • Seat Sacks Pack A Lot!

    Funded Sep 10, 2017

My students love their brand new seat sacks! It's wider and more convenient than their old ones. Therefore, they can store their workbooks, notebooks, and wipe boards easily. Also, unlike their old seat sacks, this one has a smaller compartment for their crayons and pencil case.

This little touch of a "seat sack" is helping each of my students stay organized and focused in class. Just imagine your work space at your job. My first graders are able to do their work in a work space that is neat and functional to learn.

Thank you for your support. Your donation means a lot to the education of my class. Please keep in touch and if you can, please check out our next project, "First Grade Math Wizards."”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • Comfy Reading at School

    Funded Oct 9, 2017

My first graders are so excited to use their new seat pillows! It added a little extra touch of home where you can get "comfy" while doing your work. Now the students can spread out in the room so that he/she can focus on their reading, writing, and math. If you can, picture 24 students in the classroom where about 1/3 of the class is sitting at various tables, 1/3 of the class is working on the carpet, and now 1/3 of the class is sitting on the pillows you donated!

My students are able to take their pillows and find a space in the room so that they can work on projects with a partner or just work independently. Having this extra space also allows the partners or small groups to engage in meaningful conversations without having to over hear others talk next to them.

Thank you for taking an interest in this project. You made learning in my class more interesting and fun. Your support is much appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

  • First Grade on a Mission to Read

    Funded Mar 30, 2017

Thank you for donating to "First Grade On a Mission To Read". The books you helped purchase are for my higher readers who have been waiting all year to get to read level G, H, and I/J books. This is their goal so that they can go to the second grade prepared. Now that most of my students are there, we needed a lot of books. Our library was looking kind of scarce and now you've helped replenish it.

My class is so excited to read these new books. They are reading them in class and at home with their parents. They were so excited to see their favorite characters in new books like Iris and Walter and Little Critter. They were also excited to see some new book series and can't wait to meet the new characters and read their stories.

On behalf of my class, your support is much appreciated. Thanks for being a part of my class's mission to read.”

  • Little Readers Want to Read, Big Time

    Funded Feb 23, 2017

Thank you for donating to "Little Readers Want to Read, Big Time". The books you purchased will be added to our class library and our guided reading program. My students will be able to read some of these books during their Silent Independent Reading time where he/she can practice their reading strategies and build their reading comprehension skills. I am also able to use the rest of the books for my guided reading groups. This is where some of the students need extra guidance (like tutoring) to enhance their skills a little more.

On behalf of my first grade class and myself, your generosity is much appreciated. Your kindness has reached 25 little readers who love to read "big time"!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. E.

    Funded Dec 19, 2016

Thank you for donating to our "Word Detectives Looking for Good Books" project. The children were excited to see the box of books delivered. They couldn't wait to read the new books. My students who are reading at levels D, E, and F were very happy to have new books to shop for.

The students couldn't wait til reading workshop to try out these new books. As "word detectives" they were practicing their reading strategies independently and with their reading partners. When I conference with them, they couldn't wait to tell me about their books and what the characters were doing.

    Seeing them read is amazing!”

    With gratitude,

Hello! I am a first grade teacher at the Amalia Castro Elementary School (P.S.142). My school is a Title 1 elementary public school in the Lower East Side. Our school population is comprised of a variety of nationalities with most families in the Hispanic, African-American, and Asian cultures. We have programs to teach students who are English-language learners and provide services for speech, physical and occupational therapy. My 5 and 6 year olds are amazing! They're full of energy and are eager to learn. These students have a big job ahead of them. They can't wait to read the books in our class library, write some amazing stories, and build their math skills. But they need your help. This year we are happy to be part of a literacy program to help them learn to read. However, we don't have enough computers in our classroom. With your help, you can help my class become AWESOME readers!
