We will use these novels during our shared reading time where each student will have a book that we will read together on the carpet. We stop to discuss our reading and how we are making connections, relating to the character, asking questions, and what new thoughts were are forming. This is our favorite part of reading workshop! The students love and take care of the books and are excited each time we read them. They become so engaged in the story that they often ask to continue to read even though our time is up! Our last novel, Number the Stars, was a huge success. Students wrote about the cruelty of war and how they felt the novel changed them. We cannot wait to read another!
