Equipping a Dual Credit Chemistry Lab for Students of Color
Funded Sep 2, 2022My dual credit chemistry students are using the donated equipment in lab. This gives them the ability to learn to use good laboratory practice. It also gives them the opportunity to have hands on activities that reinforce the concepts we cover in class. For example, students have explored the accuracy and precision of pipets. They are preparing for a lab involving titrations that will use our new burets. We use the whiteboard every class to work through calculations.
My other chemistry students are benefitting from these supplies as well. We are exploring the properties of ionic and covalent compounds. We are also observing chemical reactions.
Chemistry is learned by doing chemistry. Your gift has provided the opportunity to build skills in the laboratory.”

Students of Color, Let's Do Chemistry!
Funded Jul 20, 2021Thank you so much for investing in my students. Returning to school this fall has challenged all of us, both students and teachers. It has taken some time to get our lab ready for students. And, we have worked with our students to prepare them for laboratory, with discussions of safety and expectations.
During our first lab, I heard a junior student say, "This is the first chemistry lab that I have ever had." He sat for a few minutes just to soak it in. That broke my heart while also giving me a great sense of satisfaction. We are finally DOING chemistry! Your gift has made this possible.
Right now, we are making do with an old traditional high school laboratory, built in 1942. Nothing has been updated since that date. Your donation has helped us as we plan our transition to our new building. All of the supplies we requested were made with our new building in mind. We focused on basic lab supplies, like goggles, goggle racks, portable bunsen burners, shelving and lab bins as we look to increasing the number of our students who will participate in chemistry labs.
Thank you for making our vision possible--Students of Color Doing Chemistry!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Emerson Collective.Equipping a STEM Lab for Students of Color
Funded Jun 23, 2020Thank you for your generous and rapid response to my request for funds that will provide new equipment for our STEM laboratory. Your donation will enable us to equip a state-of-the-art laboratory experience for our students of color. This is a key component for increasing the opportunities for our students to pursue science and biomedical careers.”
