Filmmaking is always popular among students. We feel that original films are even better when original music is included. We already possess a Korg Midi controller that the students create tracks on using GarageBand, AudioTool, etc., but many have asked about recording their own drum tracks instead of having to use remade loops. A percussion pad is the missing piece of the puzzle. Students using the pad can create custom beats in multitrack mode and then play the Korg, using guitar, piano, and bass patches, over their custom drum tracks. This would allow a group of five or more to be able to divide and conquer their project. One group member can create a beat, another could add piano, another could add guitar, etc. In addition we also have students that like to create tracks to post on sites such as SoundCloud. This drum machine will again allow the students to create their own rhythms instead of pre-made beat tracks. I would also like the students to experiment with online drum tutorials to learn rhythms and challenge them to maintain them with a metronome. The percussion pad doesn't begin a journey, it will be another tool that helps further foster student creativity and provide intrinsic for a new set of students interested in percussion. I do have students that are also in band. Those percussionists will no doubt benefit from having another opportunity to practice and perform. The goal of EAST is to have multiple technologies that intrinsically motivate students to WANT to learn to create and be collaborative. It's time we entice our students interested in percussion to explore their talent in another way.
