Learning Centers is an important part of our learning day when students have the opportunity to work on different skills through fun and engaging activities. This also gives students time to learn how to work in small groups, with partners, and independently. During this time, many students prefer flexible seating options to allow them to step outside of their regular desk and chair and continue learning via alternative seating options. With the ability to select a different seating option, students are practicing decision making that better prepares them to complete their work. Flexible seating provides comfort to students and allows them to work in various locations around the classroom. I have seen this work great in my classroom so far with improved moods and engagements with their tasks at hand. This also works great for children who have a hard time sitting still or in one place for too long. The balance balls will be beneficial to students who need movement to assist their learning. By focusing on the constant movement required to stay seated on the ball the student's focus is enhanced. Likewise, the wobble cushions that can be used on both seats and the floor have the same effect. Essentially, it helps students get their wiggles out while they are engaged. The lap desks allow students to take their work to a different location in the classroom of their choosing. The countdown timer and literacy centers management chart helps students be aware of their learning center schedules and rotations and when they are to switch, thus minimizing disruptions and distractions.
