Having a smaller classroom can sometimes be difficult, and we must be creative in our styles of teaching. We have found that flexible seating seems to be our biggest success in not only keeping each child comfortable and engaged, but it gives them the freedom they need to be independent learners, which is a large part of how we like to keep our classroom a fun and safe community for all. Being that we have all different leveled learners, giving them the opportunity to choose where and who they want to sit with gives them the sense of equality because they aren’t always working with the same kids, or kids who are on their level. It gives our above level learners the opportunity to share strategies they use and become the teachers in the room when sometimes a student isn’t understanding from the point of view of the teacher. It also allows us as teachers to work closely with other students that need the extra push a classmate may not provide for them. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows all students to feel included within the entire classroom community. We have seen that it gives them the boost of confidence they need, especially after working with a teacher. It also allows us as teachers to see how students work with one another and if there is any extra help needed. We are requesting standing tables, Saucer Chairs, Organizational Bins and more. We have seen positive growth in the way our students interact, and improvement in those who experience difficulty with social skills. Throughout the year we have experienced the bond our students have made with one another when given the opportunity to move freely, and the difference it has made in our classroom environment.
