The students will be using "The Freedom Writers Diary" for their last unit of study in ELA class. The book contains real diary entries from young people in urban environments which my students can relate to. The book also discusses the time period during World War II and the Holocaust and tries to make connections between the life of Anne Frank and the lives of adolescents in a modern time period. My students would read this book, along with excerpts from Anne Frank and visits to the Holocaust museum, to help their writing process in creating their own diaries of the events in their lives. This will also serve as an interdisciplinary project with Social Studies to help incorporate history and historical context. The student will create their own journals of stories, along with a research based project for SS, on the lives of those living during the Holocaust.
