One of the most relevant environmental issues on the Navajo Nation is our water quality. You see signs everywhere saying "Water is Life" or "Tó Éí Ííńá". Due to mineral deposits and mining operations, much of our tap water is contaminated. High levels of exposure to some of these contaminants can cause developmental delays or increased risk of cancer or kidney disease. But drinking bottled water in an area without recycling leads to tons of plastic waste! We will use the Conductivity Water Test as part of our testing to measure levels of metals and ions in the water water before and after using the PUR filter on our school's tap water. Students will also bring samples from home to test. When we do our Earth Day trash cleanup, students can earn water bottles as prizes so they can fill them with our filtered water instead of using plastic water bottles and contributing to our community's trash problem!
