Kids Won't Be Bored With These Math Board Games!
Funded Dec 10, 2019Since taking on this new role as the math specialist in my school, I've done a lot of research and personal reflection about math instruction. I believe at its core, math is about reasoning and logic. Along with this belief, things like building puzzles, playing card games, and playing board games help build that mathematical foundation at an incredibly early age. This is why the funding for my project is so personal and inspiring! Getting children engaged and enthused about math through games and play is necessary and critical to success. Games get students to buy in and make them willing to try new things and take risks!!
My students are in my group because math has been difficult for them, and they are in need of intervention services. Intervention often means repeated practice and trying new methods for the same concepts. Therefore, when I showed them the new games that you had so generously funded, they lit up and jumped right in. They were so excited to explore new materials and games, and they wanted to play right away. We have enacted "Fraction Fridays", and they ask first thing every Friday to play the Fraction Formula game!
I have begun introducing the other games, not only to my direct students, but to students across the entire elementary school. Some of the games are higher-level and serve as enrichment activities that teachers can provide to students who are performing above the grade level lesson. Kids have access to these games and so on those cold, snowy, windy winter days in Massachusetts, my students can play math games that they think are fun and that build critical and logical thinking skills.”
