Our focus in 11th grade is on American Literature. Unfortunately most of the books available for students seem to focus on one specific type of ethnic group and are mostly authored by males. I would like to give my students the opportunity to see themselves in literature, regardless of their background. I have selected a range of books that have both female, and male authorship and explore other cultures. It's important for me to provide students with literature that they can identify with, whether they are Muslim, Mexican, Black; into sports or music; are male or female etc... It's also important for me to provide opportunities for my students to theoretically "walk a mile in someone else's shoes." Literature provides a venue for kids to see what it's like to come from a different background, and hopefully gain a better understanding of other cultures and people. A lack of understanding is what leads to prejudices and hate. I'm hoping this selection of books will lead to greater understanding and compassion in my classroom. Learning to love literature is one thing, learning to love other people and cultures is the higher goal.
