My 3rd grade students are energetic learners who are learning to be independent. Many of them come from busy homes with very little time devoted to reading. They are learning what great readers do and what it feels like to get into a book that can't be put down! Our public school is a northeast suburb of Chicago, IL in a town that is comprised of many different cultures and hard working individuals. Our school has begun to place a strong emphasis on early reading intervention and helping kids gain a love of reading that will last into adulthood is our number one goal. Our children spend many hours during the day engaged in many different types of reading activities that are geared toward learning how to be independent. It is not too often that a person walking by would see our students sitting in desks in perfect straight rows. Our children spend most of their time sitting in a quiet spot on the floor, working in a cozy chair, or sitting with a small group at a table.
