My school is a Title I School, with 100% Free and Reduced Lunch. We work to provide instruments & materials for all of the students who want to play regardless of whether they can afford their own. More than 1/3 of the students at my school are involved in the band program. We have a good problem to have, and that is we often are scrambling to find enough instruments to cover the band. Being in band, for some students, is the only place where they feel successful. Many of my students are from families of poverty, but I don't think this should limit their educational experience. My class celebrates the richness of the many cultures represented at my school. We even began an International Music & Arts Festival, for our community, where the band plays a central role. We do a unit in September discussing the contributions of hispanic musicians, and my students learn different genres of latin music. They perform these tunes as a culminating activity on the day of the International Music and Arts Festival. This lesson teaches them of the impact we all can have on our community, even when we're young. I want to provide for my students an opportunity to express themselves and feel that they are a part of something bigger than themselves. Having good quality instruments and materials to play is essential. We want to keep the music playing for all students...
