The student population in my school includes Pre-K thru 3, located in a rural Midwestern town. Included in this population are a variety of special-needs students. These special needs students have their own scheduled music class. Their favorite instrument without a doubt is the drum, specifically any African type drum. Implementing lessons using African drums and associated rhythms have been very successful in building the self-confidence and self-esteem of these special-needs students in a world in which they may often find challenging.
