  • Nature Explorers

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

It's coming on the end of our fall semester and our children have had such an enriching time with our fall garden! Your generosity has made this possible and we can't thank you enough. Being able to integrate a physical interaction with seeds, soil, water, time, and season change with what we are learning in the classroom creates important pathways in a child's mind.

In the Spring the water table will be integral to our work cycle as we study the movement of water, clean the vegetables we harvest from the garden, and study the concept of sink/float to study how nature interacts with water.

Inside the classroom the students have enjoyed investigating and manipulating the shells and fossils. You made this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Elder

  • Get Ready, Get Set, and Go Have Fun

    Funded Feb 12, 2022

Thank you so much for your donations! My students were excited beyond words to get new works. The youngest children have used the lock and key sets to gain a better understanding of phonics as each lock has a picture with a matching letter sound on a key. The older students are working on CVC words with letter matching and missing sounds. my beginning readers have started consonant blend sorting activities which has allowed them to read so many more words. I have already seen such growth in their understand of basic reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Elder

  • Play is Our Work

    Funded Dec 16, 2018

My students and I are so grateful to you for your donation to our class. We have been using the animals of the continents to increase vocabulary and develop a sense of the world, the rhyming cards and sandpaper letters to build phonemic awareness and phonics skills, the pattern cubes and red and blue rods to develop patterns and number sense, and the sandpaper globe to increase knowledge of geography. The children love using these works and teaching what they've learned to the younger students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Elder

Montessori materials are designed to ignite a curiosity in the child. These materials are meant to be used by the children during sensitive periods for math, language, movement, and sensorial development. The teacher observes the child and presents materials at the time the child shows interest; therefore, the child leads his/ her development in a natural way. These materials allow the children to actively engage in meeting cognitive learning objectives while also organizing their thinking through sensory motor activities. For example, the sandpaper letter materials not only help the child learn letters and sounds, but also stimulate the sensorial and muscle memory. Phonetic reading blocks are used to build word families. The animal picture matching materials build vocabulary as well as a system for organizing similar items in categories. The cylinder cards and pattern blocks form a basis for mathematics and logical thinking. Small numerical rods use gradation to introduce quantity and addition. The materials in the Montessori environment are prepared in such a way to allow the child to develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration, and independence. The child has the freedom to return to these works as often as he/ she would like.
