My 8 students are diagnosed with a mixture of behavioral and cognitive disabilities such as ADHD, Emotional Disturbance, Autism and Dyslexia. However, despite their disabilities, they are one of the funniest, liveliest and most independent bunch I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Something I found interesting this year is that despite their disabilities, they truly love reading!
Every morning we start our day with 20-minutes of "Reading With Friends", which is where I get to truly see how much they love reading, or even just get to see them attempting to read. Students have 2 little teddy bear friends that they "read" too. They can choose any book they want and can sit anywhere in the classroom. My students truly love this, and even if they don't know how to read they at least try. They show their "friends" the pictures in the book, turn the pages and attempt to tell the story based on the pictures in the book.
As an educator, one of the most rewarding things to see is your students engaging in reading, especially when they have a hard time reading because of their own tribulations that they're trying to overcome.
I am asking for leveled readers and electronic tablets so that I can continue to challenge my students to read both printed books and electronic books, so that they are exposed to a variety of the presentation of literature. Also, phonics games on the electronic tablets will help me with teaching things like letter recognition, letter sounds, and spelling, while making it fun and engaging to learn.
