Flex seating is a research-based way to improve student motivation, increase engagement and allow for choice within the classroom. My current students are active 5-year-olds that need to stay moving and comfortable to learn at their best. They often become restless sitting at typical chairs and tables. Flex seating will allow my students to feel comfortable and allow them the opportunity to pick a place for them to learn best. When choice is given to my students, I noticed they are actively engaged and doing their best work. With more choices, my students will show improvement in their academic goals. I have seen first hand how choices can truly affect how a student is learning and performing in the classroom. This project will fund yoga balls and wobble cushions, to allow subtle movement during work time. The goal for these students is to be able to complete their best work. Some students need more movement and different seating options to meet their needs. Flex seating allows for student choice, increased participation and allows students to take ownership of their own learning. Herman Miller states, "Giving [students] some control over their surroundings adds to their sense of well-being." Flex seating allows students to find a quiet space, a space close to the board or to sit in an area with more natural light. The alternative lighting options will give ALL students a more calm space to learn. Fluorescent lighting can be hard on students' eyes and cause them difficulty in the classroom. Susan Fitzell states, "By diffusing these harsh lights, and introducing more natural lighting into the classroom, we’re working with the body’s natural circadian rhythms to indicate to the brain that it’s time to be awake and alert." Placing filters over the lights providing alternative lighting will help my students.
