Many of my students would greatly benefit from having a sensory room designed to help provide them with the sensory input they need in order to help regulate their behavior and emotions. Students don't always need the same type of input. For instance, some students may need to touch different types of textures to help recenter them. Some items that help with this are the putties and massage balls. On the other hand, students may seek visual stimulation and the bubblers and visual timers help them refocus and calm. No one student is like the other, and that includes the type of sensory input that helps them to refocus and stay calm. By having a room that can provide a variety of options for them to choose from, we have a better chance at meeting their sensory needs. We are requesting fidgets, such as Koosh balls and items in the Sensory Toy Bundle, that can help students get the sensory input they need through a variety of movements or textures. Some students refocus by using things that appeal to their sense of smell, so by having items, such as Silly Scent Crayons and Markers or Scentos Dough, that contain different scents can help students find something that helps them refocus and be ready to learn when they return to the classroom. On the other hand, some students need activities that occupy their mind and allow them to let go of the pent-up energy and frustration. This is where puzzles and coloring books are helpful. By meeting their sensory needs we're helping these students stay centered and focused on what is happening in their learning environment.
