My classroom consists of up to 28 lower-economic third grade children. This project will meet several educational needs within the classroom. It will teach community because flexible seating encourages the sharing of space and supplies. Students will need to learn to take turns to share the different locations and space set up within the classroom. It will also teach choice. Students will have the opportunity to look inward and see where they work best and with who. Flexible seating allows them to try different choices and make changes as necessary. It allows for them to take control of their own learning. Flexible seating promotes collaboration. It allows for students to easily get into pairs, small groups or for the class to work as a whole. In addition, it allows for movement and for the students to be more comfortable. By providing for both of these things students are then better able to engage in learning. Students are able to sit, stand at the standing desk, bend, kneel and twist while sitting on the floor cushions. This movement, which all students need, allows for students to be more focused and therefore more productive. Flexible seating also allows for sensory input by sitting on the balance ball. Sensory input is helpful to students with ADHD and ADD. This type of stimulation can help students process information and focus better.
