My seventh grade science students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with over sixty percent of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. Many of them come from low to mid-income ranges and are faced with several challenges both in and outside of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face each day, I try to engage them with creative and meaningful experiences. The personal world of my students revolve around the daily application of technological devices, such as cell phones, tablets, or laptops. I believe that they will grasp the content better when it is enhanced with a STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Performance based tasks include collaborations that incorporate reading, writing, and speaking like a scientist.
