The texts that I am requesting will enable my students to participate in two separate book clubs to enhance their learning experience in my classroom. How does a book club work? Students will read one of the texts from a book club list. They will meet with those that read the same text and discuss what was learned. They will then meet with others who read different texts from the same book club list and make a comparison of the different texts. While choosing texts for my book club on strong females, I chose females that I thought would pique the interests of my students. I also tried to choose females that represent a variety of cultures and eras. The texts that I chose for my book club on times of war represent a variety of different conflicts. Participating in book clubs has many benefits for elementary students. First of all, they give kids an opportunity for cooperative learning; students can help each other make sense of a text. Book clubs also allow students to make choices about their learning since they can select what they want to read, and they are fun as they allow for social experiences. Finally, book clubs are powerful experiences for those reluctant and/or struggling readers.
