I have been teaching for three years, and every year I have had to switch grade levels due to my schools needs. I am overjoyed to be staying in 5th grade, however I realized my classroom library is severely lacking age appropriate informational texts. My students deserve a library that has a book for everyone, from those who love adventure and fantasy, to the future scientists who would prefer to read about cells and biodiversity. I also hope to provide them with a year subscription to Scholastic News, to help them gain an understanding of current events as they happen and teach them to read news through a critical lens. Finally, I selected a collection of 3 plays that help being historical events to life. History and Social Studies have been on the back burner of almost every school because they are not emphasized on state testing. I would like to bring my students' social studies lessons to life, and immerse them in not only the history of the United States, but help them to become aware of cultures around the world and the history of their people.
