Our students often enter high school as reluctant readers, so the 9th grade English team starts off every school year with reading a high-interest text. We had been reading Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." Our students -- who are typically behind in reading skills and language proficiency -- adore this novel. Our classrooms would be filled with sounds of laughter, pages turning, and teenagers discussing social topics like racism, violence, and classism. Many even read ahead of their reading assignments. However, in light of allegations of sexual misconduct and Alexie's admittance of them, we have decided to choose another novel that will also excite the kids about reading. "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" is the perfect choice as it is a culturally relevant text that our kids will immediately connect with. Our students do not often see themselves represented in literature, and this novel will show them that they can exist in and write literature. Our goal is to introduce our students to books that will instill a love or a deeper love for reading, and I think this culturally responsive novel will help us accomplish that goal.
