Our school is in a low socio-economic area in Las Vegas, Nevada. 100% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. We are a majority Hispanic, Title 1 school with language development as a concern and priority. A large percentage of the students are classified as having Limited English Proficiency. Students learn best through playing. These math tools will allow students, at varying degrees of understanding, to develop and apply skills through manipulation, practice, and games. The standards we are focusing on are: 5 NBTA Decimals - connecting to whole number place value, making meaning, comparing, and rounding 5 NBTB Multiplying & dividing whole numbers including using the standard algorithm 5 NBT B Decimals -All operations with decimals through hundredths 5 NFA-Fractions -Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators 5 NFB-Fractions - Multiplying fractions, including the area of a rectangle and scaling 5 MDC -volume - understanding concepts of volume and relating volume to multiplication and to addition. While students are working collaboratively they will grow through discourse. While working independently with these tools, their skills will be applied and solidified.
