  • Let's Start the Year Off Right

    Funded Sep 10, 2022

I am writing to express my sincerest gratitude for your generosity in donating essential classroom materials such as pencils, highlighters, Expo markers, and stickers to my classroom. Your kindness has made a huge impact on my students and our learning environment.

The expo markers and highlighters have been put to good use as the students are now able to practice spelling words with new phonics patterns in a more engaging way. The vibrant colors of the markers make writing more fun, and the students are truly enjoying this new way of practicing their spelling words. We also use the highlighters almost daily to highlight a targeted phonics pattern in decodable texts.

Furthermore, the stickers and fidget toys have been a huge hit with my students. They have been using them as a motivation tool, and it has been amazing to see their excitement and enthusiasm for earning the prizes. They love putting the stickers on their lockers and trading them with friends.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Your donation has made a real difference in the lives of my students, and I am deeply grateful for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Conover

  • LGBT-Inclusive Classroom Libraries

    Funded Jun 13, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help, we were able to expand our school's classroom libraries to include books with more diverse characters and stories. Since we do not have a traditional library in our school, classroom libraries are essential for providing students with books.

Students love browsing classroom libraries whenever there is a free moment. It's wonderful when students who struggle with reading discover a book that peaks their interest. I have been reading many of these novels on my own, and I am now able to connect to my students on a deeper level by recommending and discussing favorites with them. When students talk to me about their identities and experiences, I can recommend books that I know they will relate to. I know that these stories give my students language to reflect on their own backgrounds and lives, and the diverse characters give them a sense of connectedness and community.

Thank you so much for your donation- you have made such a difference in our school.”

    With gratitude,

  • Culturally Relevant Literacy Intervention

    Funded Sep 27, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations. I have been able to expand the little library in my office. As a Reading Specialist, it is essential that I help my students understand the connections between the foundational skills we are learning (phonics, phonemic awareness etc.) and the joy and learning that comes from a good book. Students in my groups are able to select books to take home for 2 weeks. I am very excited to offer struggling readers chapter books that are culturally relevant and interesting, meeting their needs as readers while not being overly "babyish."

It as been wonderful to watch students look through the library and joyfully select books that reflect their interests and speak to their backgrounds and identities. My students can be seen reading these books in the hallways, during lunch, and even sneak-reading them in class!

Thank you so much- you have made such a difference in our school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Conover

  • LGBT-Inclusive Library

    Funded Sep 8, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help, we were able to expand our library to include books with more diverse characters and stories. We were even able to offer book baskets to other English classrooms in the school in order to reach as many students as possible.

Students have been volunteering to come to the classroom during lunch to help organize books into genres. We also ordered a new bookshelf to display the books in the classroom. The GSA members take pride in keeping the library organized.

Students visit the library daily to browse the shelves. I have been reading many of these novels on my own, and I am now able to connect to my students on a deeper level by recommending and discussing favorites with them. • LGBT Friendly Books for Teens

    Funded Apr 20, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donations. For the past few weeks, students have been eagerly opening boxes of books for our LGBT-inclusive library. It has been wonderful to watch students excitedly flip through the pages of each book and decide which one they want to read first!

Students have been volunteering to come to the classroom during lunch to help organize and label each book. We also ordered a new bookshelf to display the books in the classroom. Since we do not have a librarian, students helped create a sign-out binder so that we can keep track of when books are checked out and returned. The GSA members take pride in keeping the library organized.

It as been wonderful to watch students look through the library and joyfully select books that reflect their identities. My students can be seen reading these books in the hallways, during lunch, and even sneak-reading them in class!

The middle school students in my school's GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance) are eager to educate their teachers and peers about their identities and experiences. They want to create a school community built on empathy and knowledge, not just tolerance of differences. LGBT- identified youth deserve to see themselves and their lives reflected in the stories they are reading. My students want to create an LGBT-friendly section of their middle school library in order to normalize LGBT stories and to make sure all students feel seen, accepted, and safe in their school environment.
