Lets be honest, most 8/9 year old kids cant sit still, and anyone who expects them to doesn't truly understand their needs! In addition to this, students who have ADHD really struggles in an environment that doesn't allow for comfort, movement and sensory input. They may struggle to fully reach their academic potential. I have already created this environment out of tools/materials that I have put together and can say it has worked WONDERS!! Flexible seating will allow better communication, sensory needs, fun, comfort, commitment to learn, a sense of a comfortable classroom community, collaboration, decision making (this is HUGE... becoming a problem solver and deciding what option is good for them!) and a positive move towards physical/mental health. I like to always compare flexible seating to this... Do we get more accomplished at home in professional clothes or our comfy clothes?... Therefore, will students get more accomplished when they are in a comfortable seat or in a one size fits all desk? In addition to the flexible seats, white board tables are the way to go! There is something about having a dry erase marker that motivates and encourages a child dramatically verses paper and pencil... on top of a dry erase marker, drawing on furniture will be a sure-win!
