Students with autism may have meltdowns when they are under stress due to sensory overload. My classroom is in need of materials that will help reduce this anxiety. Using sensory toys, wiggle seat, picture symbols can help them calm down and redirect their emotions. Most of the time, they cannot control their emotions. They will just be triggered by loud noise or the information given to them is overwhelming. They need to take a break from this overwhelming sensory input. If not, it will trigger a meltdown. Students with autism will feel safe in an environment when their needs are addressed and understood. As a result, they will be more productive and cooperative for their own success in the classroom. My project consists of sensory materials that will help my students manage their emotions, support their focus, and be used to reward positive behavior. Fidget toys, liquid motion timer, and squeeze bean helps my students relax through sensory stimulation. Using picture exchange symbols make it easier for my students to communicate. I have non-verbal students who point to pictures in order to express their needs. I also have students who have ADHD and finds it difficult to sit and attend to activities. Sitting at wiggle air seats give them the sensory stimulation they need and helps them focus on classroom activities.
