Alternative seating will further enhance the culture of learning in my classroom, appealing especially to students' learning styles and preferences. Flexible seating arrangements will also provide an opportunity for my students to take pleasure in learning during instructional tasks such as partner reading activities, literacy stations, and independent practice opportunities. Flexible seating such as comfortable floor seats, balance ball sets, and soft seats will especially appeal to young students who are typically withdrawn, have learning disabilities, or behavioral disorders. My students love to read or learn new literacy skills while gently bouncing on a comfortable ball versus a stiff chair. They also prefer to read or work on top of their desk, under their desk, or clustered on the floor. Different seating options will support these preferences. The "Reader's Rocking Chair" will intrinsically motivate students to become better readers and speakers, as it will provide an opportunity for students to practice book read-alouds in literacy stations. Consequently, alternative seating will increase students' attention span, intrinsic motivation, and overall achievement.
