  • Dna Magnetic Model and More!

    Funded Apr 7, 2025

Woot woot!!! Thanks to you and other generous donors, my project has been fully funded. We are currently on Spring Break, but the items will be ordered Friday and should arrive next week! I'm so excited to get these items into the hands of students. Our DNA unit begins soon so the timing of this is perfect. Thanks again so much for supporting my classroom and students. All of these are supplies that will benefit students for year to come!”

  • Diverse Colors Makes the World a Better Place!

    Funded Sep 30, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to provide quality colored pencils to my students. The combination of the Colors of the World pencils and those in the boxed set allow my students to complete the diagram as directed and make beautiful colored pictures for those without instructions. Please check out just a few examples of work created by my students.

Today my students are coloring a page with the "sliding filament" theory diagrams, so they are being used yet again. The sharpeners are terrific too!

Thank you so much for supporting my students! You rock!!!”

  • Color My Copies!

    Funded Mar 21, 2024

Thank you so very much for the ink cartridges. With the yellow cartridge empty, the printer wouldn't even print in black and white, so it was a happy day when the shipment arrived. As you can see, from the photos, it is now installed and helping me print essential color cards and resource sheets for my students.

Thank you so very much for your generous support of my students and our classroom. Just this week we used the amino acid cards to build a human chain of amino acids which folded based on the color of the cards. It was a great visual for my students to see how making minor changes in the cards made a big difference in the shape change. We are so grateful and appreciative! There are so many items for which the color on the card makes all the difference! Your donation is making a difference!”

  • Studying Breast Cancer Genes

    Funded Jan 19, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting this project. The centrifuge and micropipette have been used in multiple labs including one where students isolated their own DNA and of course during the study on Breast Cancer genes. This was a new lab for me too, so I certainly learned right along with the students about the inheritance mechanism and patterns of the BRAC 1 gene. In this kit, students examine a family history, made a pedigree, and then ran gels to see which band was present for those with breast cancer. Check out the photos attached of some of our results. This was a great learning experience for us all and I look forward to using the centrifuge and micropipette for more lab studies both this year and for years to come. Thank you so very much! Your donation has made a big impact for me and my current and future students.”

  • Huntington's Disease Detection Labs and More!

    Funded Jan 18, 2023

I am thrilled to report that the items from this project have yielded terrific results and brought a level of learning and understanding to my students that simply would not have been possible without your generous donation.

Just yesterday we completed the Hunting for Huntington's Disease lab where students began by looking at family history to create a pedigree, calculated the length of the gene sequence from the 2 copies per parent, made Punnett Squares to determine the possible outcomes for children of these two, and then ran the DNA with Gel Electrophoresis to see what was indeed inherited by the two children. I was super worried that with the recent power outages that the samples would be ruined, but THEY WORKED!! Take a look at the beautiful results from one of my lab groups. All student groups got excellent results and used micropipettes like pros! It was so rewarding for the students to use these learning tools so successfully. They were excited and I had several talk to me about how they really understand genetics so much better after having done this lab.

Seeing is such a powerful learning mechanism. With Pivot Interactive online, they were able to "see" the consumption of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide for 5 items of their choice from humans, to fish, to pea plants, to peach mold as they watched time lapse video as the experiment was run with sensors. This experiment would have taken many hours to run in person, yet they were able to see the results for themselves in several minutes. The combination of multiple choice and short answer questions that are embedded in the activity allowed them to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and apply their learning to other situations.

I can't thank you enough for your generous support of my students and their education. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

    Mrs. Brawn

  • Lab Tools, Supplies & Storage

    Funded May 31, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous gift to my students and our classroom. It was such a relief to be able to provide good quality notebooks to students so they could start the year off right with a place to organize and keep their biology notes, handout, and lab writeups. With so many families struggling financially, it was a joy to be able to hand this to my students. Each student creates a cover with images that represent biology and a slogan to personalize their notebook and to start them thinking of what they may learn about in the coming year.

As for my anatomy and physiology students, last year's students were able to use the dissecting probes as they completed a cow eye dissection and this year's students have already used the new stethoscopes. I look forward to using the blood pressure cuffs in the coming months. I am so grateful to have access to such fantastic equipment that will give reliable readings for years to come.

I can not thank you enough for your willingness to invest in the educational opportunities for my very worthy students.'”

  • Awesome Anatomy Dissections

    Funded Feb 19, 2022

I can't thank you enough for the dissection materials. The kids were so excited to complete these labs and the informational mats made it so easy for the students to understand and make sense of what they were viewing.

The previous school year, we were only able to do an "online" dissection, viewing pictures from others. This year it was so fantastic for them to be able to do the dissection themselves and to see the subtle differences between specimen. It was my first time dissecting an eye, so that was super interesting for us all. The new dissecting trays and mats kept all of the materials contained and were easy to clean afterwards.

Thank you so much for your generosity and helping make our Anatomy and Physiology classes engaging.”

  • Let It GLO Lab & PCR System

    Funded Jan 30, 2022

I can't tell you how thrilling it was to share this lab experience with my students. As usual, I was a bit nervous, wondering if it would really work - would the glowing jellyfish DNA really be taken up by the bacterial plasmid and would we be able to see a difference between those with the gene blocked and the gene expressed? YES!! When you view the photos: Lane 1: no antibiotic so the bacteria grew and spread. Lane 2: antibiotic killed the bacteria (no growth), Lane 3: with the jellyfish gene so antibiotic resistant, but the glo gene inhibited, and Lane 4 with the jellyfish gene GLOWING!!!

The micropipette, the PCR machine, and the Winston Fluorescent viewers will be used for years to come to complete this same lab and others too. Thank you so very much for your generosity and to contributing to the education of my students.

I currently have a project posted to purchase blood pressure cuffs for my anatomy and physiology students. Check it out, if you are looking for another project to support. Either way, I'm so grateful to you for helping my students and me.”

  • Science Molecular Models

    Funded Nov 26, 2021

These kits are even better than I'd imagined! The enzyme and phospholipid membrane kits arrived first, just in time to review for the student's unit exam. They were able to use the manipulatives to reinforce the learning we'd done in the traditional way. The sodium potassium pump and other membrane channels were especially effective in solidifying their understanding.

The water kits were next to arrive. I thought they would just contain the pieces to create water, but was pleasantly surprised to find an NaCl in each cup. This allowed the kids to see how the water interacts with those ions to surround and dissolve the salts. There are even pieces to create methane and alcohol included.

These kits are so great. The kids love playing with them. You can't ask for a better way to learn than to play with educational toys. Thank you so much for your generosity. Your donation has truly made a difference!”

  • Gel Electrophoresis Kits

    Funded Dec 20, 2021

This is so exciting! Since these techniques were developed after I graduated from college, this is my first time using this equipment too. I've done a practice run and am ready to share these amazing materials with my students! Take a look at the pictures. I definitely got better with practice at using the micropipette and know that my students will too. The micropipette practice kit will enable them to perfect the technique needed to load the gels with precise amount of DNA material to be able to run the gel electrophoresis with the best results possible.

I am so thrilled to be able to bring gel electrophoresis into the classroom. Students will doing several experiments with the gel boxes. The first, they will run samples provided to determine which individuals have 0, 1, or 2 copies of a gene. Next they will run their own DNA to determine whether they have that gene as well. The students can't wait to get started and neither can I.

Thank you so much for your donation to make these lab experiences possible.”

Each unit there are projects and activities that require materials to be printed in color so a color printer becomes an essential tool. As we study the salamanders in our home state of California, the maps showing rainfall patterns and Salamander distribution and the resource sheets showing the salamander's warning and camouflage coloring are only effective when printed in color. Then there are the many HHMI resources such as the Trophic Cascade and Rock Pocket Mouse Cards and other color cards that I've developed over the years that also must be printed in color to be effective. There are so many materials that we will be able to utilize when we can print in living color!
