Maneuvering Math Engagement With Ease
Funded Dec 1, 2020Thank you for funding my mth project for my students. This school year has been challenging for everyone. Trying to find ways to keep students engaged and active in their studies has been ongoing. We are all learning how to maneuver in the new "normal." These writing pads will allow my students to work more efficiently through their math problems and focus on engagement rather than struggling with technology.
Your generosity helps narrow equity gaps and create opportunities for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to stay inspired to learn in less than ideal spaces. My students are excited to be in "school" learning! These devices will boost their confidence and create space for them to explore the wonderful world of mathematics. I can't thank you enough.”

Funded Jun 12, 2018As a math teacher leader for the middle school, we are using our new resources in the classroom(s) to help the students explore and make connections with mathematical concepts. In the 6th grade, we are currently working with coordinate grids, expressions and order of operations. The students were excited to see Manipulatives Cart. Sometimes it is hard for teachers to buy in to the idea of using manipulatives with middle school students. This project has allows me to demonstrate and use the manipulatives in class and show the success of an organized well managed system. In addition to this, transporting them between and around the classroom(s) is a much easier for the students and teachers and the cart remains organized and available.
Using the coordinate grid squares to show students how to plot points, helps them to make tangible connections to abstract concepts. We work in small group settings to reach the children's varying levels of ability. By demonstrating their use in small group settings, it makes math instruction more manageable and the students are showing greater success.
The students are still struggling with vocabulary and prerequisite skills and concepts from previous grades. We are also working on with them to deconstruct word problems and answering multi-step open ended problems.
Our success in math this year is increasing. With the addition of new materials and resources, we are reinventing the children's perception of math and the excitement is growing.
Thank you for your support with this project and as you have helped our students to move towards mathematical proficiency.”

Making Sense of Math... A Hands-On Approach

Using the base ten blocks to show groupings for the students helps them to make tangible connections to abstract concepts. We work in small group settings to reach the children's varying levels of ability. By demonstrating their use in small group settings, it makes math instruction more manageable and the students are showing greater success. Also, we are using the dry erase boards for the students and the teachers to break down problems and share strategies for attacking them. It is so much easier for the students to attack a problem and make corrections without scratching out and erasing over and over on a regular sheet of paper.
