Graphing calculators are a basic necessity for any Algebra student in Arizona. Algebra students that do not use calculators struggle to really master standards like A1.A-REI.D, Analyze functions using different representations, and A1.F-IF.C, represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically. Not only are these students lacking in some basic Algebra necessities at the moment, but they are also missing out on the opportunity to use these graphing calculators on Arizona's standardized math test. Every student should have the opportunity to fairly access the curriculum as well as find new ways to represent impressive function relationships through the connection of a Calculator Based Ranger. Specifically, these CBRs allow students to create real-life distance v. Time graphs and connect directly to TI-83 calculators. The ability for students to walk through their own scenario s as well as recreate mine allows true discovery learning. I truly desire to present qualitative graphing to my students in a way that will help them critically think about the real-life applications to mathematics as well as engage in activities that help them retain their information.
