Students who come from poverty have limited language experiences. Providing students a comfortable place to read in the small child size recliners, before and after school with affluent adults around, will encourage language development. Students can read and have help with problem words and use vocabulary building activities to introduce and use new words that appear in classroom and reading materials. Building relationships with Students. Students will have someplace to go that is supervised by an adult. Modeling behaviors and giving guidance to children who may otherwise be left to make the choice to read on their own. Let’s recall the impacts of toxic stress on the brain. A child who has lived in a state of fear and anxiety has likely developed a significant fight-or-flight response. In homes of poverty, studies have shown children commonly get twice as many reprimands as positive comments (Risley & Hart, 2006). Strong, positive, and caring educators help children build trust in adults. We can further motivate learning by making an effort to understand children’s unique backgrounds and incorporating their interests. Providing a meaningful before and after school activity. To encourage reading as opposed to playing video games or playing on a phone. Give student a chance to be less lonely.
